[wavegreen] [wavegreen]

Is there a specific, widely available (i.e., not provided only to you) recording you can point to that you heard this way? Or does this apply to every MQA recording? The reason I ask: I've measured quite a few MQA tracks--rendered them with a Brooklyn then recorded 192/24--and found a range of different results in the FFT, from ruler-flat to a bit different. I haven't yet figured out how to detect phase-only changes (which shift frequencies around relative to each other but leave magnitudes unaffected), but I'm working on that.

Thanks.
No one calls me Lucie. Brian is fine, thanks.

So you're re recording MQA DA from the Brooklyn DA and then measuring? That's nutty, sorry. Bob Stuart would agree with me that the measuring you're doing does not tell the whole story. Music is not a static tone and human hearing is not built for listening the way we have built measuring tools.

You really need to get past the Brooklyn to be credible with your monitoring. The Manhattan II at least, which I helped them to design, or the Berkeley Audio Designs DA, or the Bricasti M1 SE. The Brooklyn is highly non linear and very punchy in the transients.

What's really needed? Better engineering, and better PCM AD DA. It's not like the tech we have today is weak. It's so much better than it was in the 80s.

If MQA could deliver a file that sounds like it does now and was much smaller it would be interesting. File streaming of 24 bit files is just around the corner no matter the resistance some audiophile magazines are giving it lately. Wonder why .. hmmm, ad revenue ... new tech articles ... MQA is more lucrative for magazines than boring 24 bit streaming.

Again, you both missed the point. It's not about what you or I think sounds "better". That makes all of this move in to subjective audiophile PR land, where anything goes. It's about comparison to the source.

You're not a hack and I never said any of that. You do seem a fan boy to the tech, responding as an audiophile to a change that you seemingly can't get with your tools and skills. (your words not mine, see below)

Yes, thanks, there is a change to tonal balance and imaging. THE END.

What on earth is worth that loss?

You are reading their PR sheet, or that's your view? Sounds like the former, does it not?

Tonal balance is not EQ-able? Imaging is not MS-able?
All that's left is Harmonic content and Transient content and Level. There is nothing else we do than those 5 is there?

It's a change, and it's bad as compared to the source, as it's to BOTH tonal balance and imaging in your words. It's not fixing anything worth the TRADE OFF in my view. Mastering is as you know about trade offs.

Again, what on earth could possible be worth changing the tonal balance and the imaging? What is the gain you can ONLY get with MQA that makes a vocal forward, leaner and more thin side music an upgrade worth all this hassle and EXPENSE?

MQA, IMO, will be most effective and justifiable when it is part of the original mastering process. It will significantly affect what decisions are made in the mastering room - for example, likely less EQ!
What are the PCM tools used to think that MQA will do all that?

You above agreed that there is a change to both tone and imaging. How would that going to mean less EQ in mastering? Makes no sense at all.

I don't want for anything with the Pacific Microsonics AD at 44.1 and the Bricasti M1 SE DA. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Good filters and good analog stages.

I found the technology plausible and intriguing, and 2. With Bob Olhsson and Alan Silverman, I like the way it sounds. (Silverman's characterization, above, matches my experience.)
Jim when you say "I like the way it sounds" You were listening to PCM 24 bit source files vs. 16 bit MQA files? Using what DA? What filter in the DA for the PCM?

This is very important as the filter and the DA is everything.

MQA, being a subjective flavor that changes the tonal balance and the imaging (per Arf) is going to react to your DA differently and as a contrast to the PCM filter in a subjective way.

I'm not convinced your monitoring is sufficient, and your measurements have left you confused by your own admission.

They've made good points but haven't yet succeeded in changing my mind, which however remains open. A few hours? That long?

And after talking with very knowledgeable DA makers, you have not changed your open mind about what exactly?

Your connection to Bob is this ... you need material. Stories. Future income from new tech. A Stereophile writer with an opinion is like a music critic. You create NOTHING. All you do is come up with things to say to make yourself a name and to make money and in so doing you glean a position in the world of creators (those designers you disagree with, and me for example) by being a parasite to the process.

Critics and music writers in 99% of the cases, have no value except to themselves. They can not get out of their way to see the reality of anything. If they had more skill they would be CREATORS. DA makers, engineers, artists, etc.

Parasitic energy, just like the MQA tech. Of course you like it, you are brothers in arms.

some of my favourite sounding mixes were prepared on an o2r and completed on the ssl 9000j. so what? does this 'prove' that pcm or worse, yamaha converters, cannot be improved upon? i hate to say this, but you're being a dummy here.
What I'm saying is that human beings love to focus on what looks like the easy way out. MQA is an example of an easy way. What's the hard way? Great filters, great AD and DA, great engineering choices.

This is a free lunch proposition.

Yes. Thank you. Real talk from the street.

"We support DVD Audio. But the most important thing I think we have to do, is to produce the sound from CD, which is so good, and so exquisite, that the difference to high resolution (my edit: 24 bit PCM) is very small."

He also states "CD is good enough for 95% of the people" and laughs at audiophiles and their private recordings / special audiophile versions of the same recording.

So why did Bob make a 180 degree turn?

Money. The income stream dried up with video.

I've met Bob, and I have heard him speak. I don't trust him one bit. Used car salesman, with a soft tone to disguise the hammer he's wielding, and the British accent to make the tech more convincing to Americans who are moved by such a thing.

I was told after we met and I raised concerns in a room of 100 that he would contact me, and it has not happened. Draw your own conclusions.

Coming up with terms like "deblurring" for a lack of filtering does take a lot of time, I'll admit. Maybe a new term for aliasing will be next.
