“Legendary Recordings” is what is written on the cover of this impressive Deutsche Grammophon vinyl box and indeed, the six LPs with the Berliner Philharmoniker presented here all wrote recording history.
First in chronological order is Wilhelm Furtwängler’s 1951 darkly dramatic reading of Schubert’s C major Symphony. Karl Böhm and his sonorous interpretations of Mozart can also be relived once again, as can Herbert von Karajan who brings the full, intensive power of Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique to life. Another classic of the catalogue is Rafael Kubelík’s recording of Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony with its manifold multicoloured facets, and of course a performance by Claudio Abbado is an absolute must. He is represented here by Brahms’s Third Symphony, recorded a few weeks before the Berliner Philharmoniker appointed him chief conductor. The final contribution is by Pierre Boulez, who was a regular and highly respected guest of the Berliner Philharmoniker, especially in his later years, and is represented here by Ravel interpretations of concentrated energy.
This tour through the recording history of the Berliner Philharmoniker is presented on high quality 180 gram vinyl discs which are produced in the renowned Optimal pressing plant. The six LPs are packaged in individual sleeves with their original designs and come in an elegant, laminated box with booklet.
