Hi-Res Audio Movement Gains Significant Momentum

LONDON AND SANTA MONICA, FEBRUARY 16, 2017 – Music technology company MQA and Universal Music Group (UMG), the world-leader in music-based entertainment, announced today that the companies have entered into a multi-year agreement that will encode UMG’s extensive catalogue of master recordings in MQA’s industry-leading technology, promising to make some of the world’s most celebrated recordings available for the first time in Hi-Res Audio streaming.

Today’s announcement comes shortly after the launch of the cross-industry marketing campaign “Stream the Studio”, launched at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and spearheaded by The DEG: the Digital Entertainment Group, to raise awareness of the advantages of Hi-Res Audio streaming.

To ξαναπούλημα της βιβλιθήκης σίγουρα είναι κάτι θεμιτό αλλα νομίζω οτι δεν είναι η προτεραιότητα αυτή την φορά αφου σαν concept είναι ξεπερασμένο και δεν μπορεί να στηρίξει το όλο εγχείρημα που βλέπουμε να ξετυλίγεται μπροστά μας ότε κάν μεσοπρόθεσμα.

Πολύ απλά μόλις κυκλοφορήσουν μαζικά τα (λογικά υπερκοσοτολογημένα) MQA αρχεία δεν θα αργήσουν να βρεθούν και σε διαύλους εκτός συστήματος και αμφιβόλου νομιμότητας και ως εκ τουτου πριν να ξεκινήσει το ξαναπούλημα των βιβλιοθηκών θα καταρρεύσει για τους γνωστους λόγους.

Πολύ απλά η ιδιοκτησία της μουσικής (εξαιρουνται τα βινύλια που είναι άλλη ιστορία) είναι πλέον χρεωκοπημένη και ξεπερασμένη ιδεα, είδικά πλέον τώρα που πλασσάρεται σε αυλη μορφή οπου πέραν οτι αντιγράφεται για πλάκα δεν τράβάει κάποιον να μπεί στα έξοδα είδικα αν μπορεί να το αποφύγει πόσο μάλλον που τις περισσότερες φορές μπορεί..

Νομίζω οτι η μουσική βιομηχανια μετά απο το κάζο που έπαθε με την πειρατεία πλέον τρέχει να καπαρώσει και να ομογενοποιήσει την παροχή μουσικής με ενοικίαση όπως και το μέλλον του ψηφιακού ραδιοφώνου που πιθανόν να έχει και αυτό μεταλλαχθει σε κάτι και νουριο σε δέκα δεκαπέντε χρόνια.
Τα κέρδη απο το Streaming και τα δικαιώματα απο την αναπαραγωγή στο ραδιοφωνο του μέλλοντος και άλλες πιθανές ψηφιακές πλατφόρμες την επόμενη τριακονταετια είναι που απασχολουν την βιομηχανία της μουσικής σε ένα μέλλον οπου όλα θα είναι ασύρματα και στο σύννεφο με το υψηλής ταχύτητας bandwith να είναι πανταχού παρόν και πάμφθηνο.

Θέλουν να προλάβουν τις εξελιξεις δημιουργώντας ενα προιόν τυποποιημένο που θα μπορουν να πλασσάρουν εύκολα στον μέσο καταναλωτή και μέσω του οποίου να παρέχουν φτηνά ευκολία αλλα και ποιότητα απο το αυτοκίνητο το κινητό και τις διακοπές εώς τα ΗΙ-ΕΝD σαλόνια (με το τελευταίο να τους ενδιαφέρει σαν μαρκετινγ περισσότερο παρά σαν σκηνή και αγορά) με το μικρότερο κόστος για το σύστημα διανομής και αναπαραγωγής τους.

Το θετικό για εμάς που εκτιμουμε και την ακουστική μας απόλαυση είναι οτι για πρώτη φορά ξεκινάει κάτι απο την μουσική βιομηχανία που να εμπεριέχει και την ποιότητα του ήχου στον πυρήνα του εδώ και είκοσι χρόνια.

Τα υπόλοιπα θα τα δείξει η ιστορία, πάντως αν μπεί και η Sony κάποια στιγμή θα το θεωρήσω σαν επιβεβαίωση των σκεψεων μου.

Pioneering MQA Audio Technology Used In Mastering Process

Tokyo / London, 16 March 2017: A recording by Astor Piazzolla “the single most important figure in the history of tango” will be the first MQA recording to be released on compact disc in Japan. The album “A. Piazzolla
by Strings and Oboe” – recorded by the UNAMAS Piazzolla Septet and mastered by respected producer and mastering engineer Mick Sawaguchi – will be released by the Ottava label on 17 March.

Since launching in the early 1980s, the CD format has undergone a number of sound quality improvements, but these have depended largely on the manufacturing process, rather than an improvement in the quality of music itself. After attending a JAS (Japan Audio Society) seminar on MQA technology presented by MQA founder Bob Stuart in late 2016, Mick Sawaguchi and Synthax Japan’s managing director, Seiji Murai, realised that MQA could enable not only 48-24 coding but also 44.1-16 coding. “We were both excited by the prospect that CD, combined with MQA technology, could herald a new era of hi-res audio,” says Sawaguchi.

MQA technology captures and reproduces the original sound quality using less data, and the MQA CD works in exactly the same way as the MQA digital file. With a conventional CD player connected to an MQA-enabled device – such as those from Meridian, Mytek, Brinkmann and Technics – the MQA CD will ‘unwrap’ to the original sample rate.

Sawaguchi compared a test MQA CD with a normal CD of the same recording at SONA Studio, played back on a CD player with a Meridian amplifier and loudspeaker systems. “Listening to the MQA CD was a great moment in my life, as it no longer sounded like music from a CD,” comments Sawaguchi.

Bob Stuart, MQA founder and CTO adds, “This exciting release demonstrates that innovative music creators, like Mick Sawaguchi, are embracing MQA as the best way to master and deliver their recordings. While MQA is ideal for streaming services like TIDAL, where studio quality sound can be streamed in smaller file sizes, we also appreciate the importance of the CD format in the Japanese market.”
